REVIEWS and INTERVIEWS:
August 2005/Black and White Photography Forum Winner
Interview by Michelle 7: Larry Hoth is a self-taught photographer from Euless, Texas. He has been shooting the female nude for several years now and has also created a lovely and artistic body of erotic imagery. He is adept at shooting both indoors as well as outdoors and has worked with a beautiful series of models.
Larry shoots his nudes in an unusual way, in that he has his model treat the session as if she were moving in slow motion, much the way you have to photograph a sailboat as it moves across the water. This also results in some unusual lighting effects as he meters the light once within the area and continues to shoot as the model moves inside that space. This probably would not work with other photographers but it is Larry's trademark.
Interview by Kyoto: I was raised on a farm in Iowa and had a great desire to mess around in boats. My first camera to come in contact with was a Kodak Brownie. I continued photographing things from that point forward until after my service days I started doing sailboats and marine photography while sailing in races. The shooting of images for stock photography has pretty much ended with the coming about of royalty free images. This led to photographing people, families, models, landscapes, flowers, etc. I shot a number of model portfolios and still do this today.
For use on my website I did most of these for free. In doing this I met a model, Nancy Freshour. She asked if I would be interested in doing some artistic nudes.
Well the rest is history, and since then I have been trying to capture the human form in its infinite shapes. I try to capture the beauty of the models, the light, shadow, and all the lines of the human form. I look for contrasts with textures, smoothness of the body and the sharp natural surroundings. The freedom that seems to come with the shedding of garments is one of the things I hope comes through.
I try to create and air of mystery, something that will draw you to the image. I primarily work in Black and White as I am totally colorblind. My wife is my color correction in color photography. I currently use both digital and 35mm. I find the digital format great for working on the internet but it does not seem to have the depth that film has. My work currently is for gallery exhibition, prints, and hopefully for a book in the future.
